I think we never got out of a recession in most countries. GDP growth has been anemic, jobs never improved in any substantial way, the housing market didn't really recover...
What happened is that governments everywhere tried to stimulate the economy which provided a little plateau, but government spending cannot go on forever as European governments are finding out, and other governments will also find out soon.
