I'm not sure about where you live, but around here car parts stores will pull the codes for free. It's likely a connection/ground problem or the fuel pump or it's relay going bad. Also if your car uses a distrubutor that's an easy and cheap thing to change/set. You might want to check your coil and it's connections also.
Also, I'm not sure about your car, but a lot of models you can get the codes on your dash by performing the right sequence before turning your key. For mine I have to hold the odometer reset button for a few seconds and then release and turn the key to the on position. The display will then flash all of the problem codes my computer had picked up. I just thought I'd add this in case you don't have a parts store that will read your codes for free for you.
