I'm gonna have to disagree with you though. There is no good reason for a country to ever run a deficit. If the CEO of a big company ever ran a deficit his ass would be fired immediately. The government just has to make some tough decisions and decide where to cut spending so we can get back to being profitable. I wish they would just put their feelings/morality aside and instead look at the cost/benefit ratio of each program to decide which ones to cut. I know its a tough call to make but it needs to be done. |
You are right but unreasonable. A buisness is not a democracy, the CEO must always put the companies profitability margins first and not always the consumer. A democracy is far different the Government is not in place just for profitability they are their to benefit and serve the people in their country.
So in order to be profitable the Canadian Government would have to make huge cuts to social services, health care, construction projects, military, Police and fire. Retirement....etc...etc....
In a democracy a leader also has to worry about being re-elected. His party is relying on him to keep the people happy at all costs and get re-elected. In the Conservatives case they are elected for their morals, their stances and their platforms. If the Conservative Government made all these cuts and raised taxes they would loose the support of the Canadian people and wouldn't be re-elected.
Also just a quick question. If Harper raised taxes cut health care and social services etc...etc... while all the citizens are loosing their jobs etc...etc... would you re-elect him?
Its not like a CEO, Democracies only exist with the support of the people. With unemployment so high and all the hardships it would have been political suicide for the Government not to go into deficit. Also Canada's deficit was among the lowest in the world, I would say Harper did a good job. Your right he could have done tons of cuts and raising taxes to avoid a defecit. But that would have only angered his supporters and the country!
