The placement of thhe PC would make a wired connection somewhat... difficult to obtain.

make sure there is no nearby microwaves or fridges. I have a friend who has the game ruiner microwave which when turned on shuts down his wifi to his playstation. I have a fridge near mine and it greatly reduces my wi fi, like walls and metal objects. 

Ethernet ports are the best thing to do, get them installed around the house, they are much more reliable and better not only for your health but faster, also its most likely a cheaper option then the wireless card. 

I live in an apartment with other tenants so this isn't immediately tenable. Is there a cheaper alternative for a wireless connection than a dedicated wireless card or no?
