Start as Royal class - killing things at range is easier.
I finished the game relying mostly on distance magic attacks when possible.
That being said if you have learnt how to block and then attack you should be good to go as a soldier.
I would also recommend you farm the red eye knight. - A boost at the start will obviously help for the whole game.
