But in Rol's case, it's a separate sentence, so couldn't he say "one" and by implication be referring to "one thread"?  In that case, he has not specified what I rarely make one of (which is arguably incorrect, but not the same mistake you claim he made), but we draw the obvious conclusion that he refers to a thread.

I think you're right. My brain hurts, it's late, I don't know. 

I just know Rol's original sentence sounds better with 'any'.
