Actually, it seems that the switching of earth's magnetic field is linked with mass extinction.
Many animals use the earth's magnetic filed to get the directions on long migrations.
But is hard to predict when they happen.
But it is once in a blue moon.
After a period of million of years, it just starts to switch the poles.
