One side effect of being a whistle blower is that you end up hurting a lot of friends and co-workers as a consequence of your actions, and can end up being "hated" for your actions. If someone was already an addict this could push them into a binge which could (quite easily) end in them dying of an overdose.

Yea.  Besides, isn't it a little late for a cover-up?  Usually, you'd want to do that BEFORE he gets the chance to bring the scandal to the public's eye.

I don't think that's the intend. It's more likely to "teach a lesson" so that anyone dare blowing shit up will risk death.
