It was a far better system to control then voice chat. Simple parsers to filter out the worst. Mmo's had (or still have) moderators to silence people who can't be reasoned with. The simple fact that you're not anonymous and everything you type is logged kept things a lot more civilized.
It's not just on xbox live. Sometimes while I'm at the playground with my 2 year old there are a couple of 10 year olds discussing CoD using the same language as you hear online, great... We discussed games as kids too, but nothing like I'm hearing now.
