Unless the price is going to be extraordinary (and I mean truly extraordinary) or the console is going to arrive more than ten years from now I simply cannot see them packing enough processing power to generate a game that looks like avatar in real time.

How many hours did it take to render an individual frame of Avatar? I thought they had thousands of computers doing this stuff in tandem.

Heaps probably. The super-computers are actually thousands of linked cores, so essentially thousands of computers doing the stuff in tandem.

 

We probably will hit avatar like graphics in a couple of generations. I think a good indicator is how long it took from making Toy Story to getting Toy Story like graphics in games.
