The screens are protected by the hard shell. Try putting your candy bar in your pocket with keys and see how the screen get destroyed.

You know it's not impossible to get keys stuck inbetween the two screens with clam shell desgin

That's why I always put my 3DS in my titanium box before stuffing in my pocket.
