Well Master Chief is a fantastic character despite what some in here are posting, he's easily one of the most beloved in all of gameing.

And the main reason for that was BECAUSE he was so vague and had very little revealed of his personality. It allowed players to project themselves into Chief's boots and pretend for a bit they were a near invincible super soldier with God like power.

So Master Chief was a great character because we could imagine we were him?  How is that different from any of the other mute, personality free characters we play in any other FPS?  I pretended that I was the guy from BioShock, too.  Guess what?  They had the exact same personality.  Being a blank slate doesn't make a character great/beloved.  It improves the immersion but when it's all said and done, I'm not marveling over how Master Chief overcame his fear of heights or whether he reconciled with his father or anything.

This.  It is beyond my comprehension how such a mediocre, relatively quiet non iconic speaking character is considered so wonderful and beloved by some people.  Halo is a good game,  Master Chief was not a good character.   I had no idea who 'Master Chief' was until a few years ago and I had played through the first Two Halos at that point.

I just frankly didn't care.  He's not John Wayne,  he's like the fourth stuntman for Brad Pitt in a movie.  No one except the obsessed knows or cares who he is.

The fact that he had no personality is exactly why he is a bland character.  Mario you can atleast give a pass because it's just never been there and Mario has been around since before you even worried about 'Personality' and things of that sort.   But Master Chief?  Meh.  Good series, Bad main character. It truly bothers me that people actually consider him a beloved character because he's never really been any form of a character.  He's no different then Nathan Hale or whatever dude you're controlling in Killzone.   That's why first person shooters are fun, it's because you don't think about someone  else you are immersed into that role whether you want to be or not.

MS is just saying this because I don't think the series has been growing as much as they anticipated with increasing releases and advertising.  Fresh off a re-boot with new developers and an unknown future they need to try and really convince you that this Halo is going to be the top of them all.
