Indie Company Works to Bring Back a Fallen Classic

Written by Frank Moricz on July 15, 2011

For most of us, there are certain games that always will remain a favorite, even if they find themselves beneath a pile of legacy games to follow.  Whether the next in the series actually meets our expectations or if we simply loved the previous game too much might be hard to discern.  Though it would be an easy conversation if we were talking about something such as a Final Fantasy title, in this case, I am speaking about the failing series that is Socom.

I write this on behalf of a friend – a poor, heartbroken soul who invested to purchase a PS3 quite recently with the sole intent of playing the newest game in the Socom series, Socom 4.  What he found within seemed to disappoint him more by the day, and most recently he decided to give up on the title ever meeting the high expectations that he had for it.

 Socom Source.

I found magic in what Shock Studios is aiming to do.  According to their website:

Every member of the development team not only played the original SOCOM games, but everyone also said that it was their favorite games of all time. Not only that, but the developers initially planned on working on this project for free by donating their time whenever they were available to work. This means that they really care about this title, and many would call it their “passion project”. Therefore, there really is no team more qualified to work on this game than us. We now have the resources necessary to become serious developers, and I can guarantee you will be quite impressed when you see the quality of our work.

Socom: Source is simply the working title for the project, and not the title of the finished game.  In doing this, they’ve begun to attract a small mass of rabid fans who share the same passion for the original games in the series versus the latest releases.

The excitement of this project is quite apparent, and though there is no set release date that I could find, the released images look very promising.  I’ve only attached a few of them into this post for load-ability, but you should visit the official website hereand show your support. The more visitors they have, the more feedback they can use, and the better their game can turn out.  If not for yourself, do it to show your support for your own tragic game… the one that got buried under poor design choices as the legacy grew.

The intro for the website reads as follows:

This is a revolution…

…where users actually have a voice in the games they play…

…Developers free from corporate control…

You can read it all at SocomSource.com.
