vita = $250, ps3 = $300 vita + ps3 = $550 / 2 = $225

i highly doubt the wii u will be this cheap i'd say probably  $350 - $400 

then if we factor in price drops of $50 - $100 off the ps3 before the wii u launches vita + ps3 = $450 - $500 ( which is much closer than your estimate )

You're being far too literal on the "Half" value, and you aren't even considering that by the time the PS-Vita starts seeing a price drop the relevant price comparison will be the PS-Vita and PS4 vs the Wii U.

But (in my opinion) the price difference was the minor point ...

A developer can count on only a subset of PS-Vita owners owning a PS3 and can only be certain that a subset of those that own both have a significant interest in PS-Vita/PS3 interconnectivity. If the PS-Vita sells really well there might be a total potential market of 5 Million people interested in games that use the PS-Vita & PS3 by the time the PS4 launches; and then you're forced to start all over again, because only a portion of PS4 owners will own a PS-Vita, and only a portion of those have a significant interest PS-Vita/PS4 interconnectivity. In contrast, everyone who buys a Wii U will have a Wii U controller and you can be certain that they "own both" because they're interested in this kind of interaction in games.

The result of this difference is huge ... While third party publishers can justify developing a Wii U game from the ground for the Wii U, or spending millions of dollars when porting a game to take advatange of the Wii U controller, few would be willing to spend the money on PS-Vita/PS3 interconnectivity and most of what you would ever see is fairly minor feature additions in PS3 games. It is rare for a third party publisher to put significant resources to target non-standard hardware.

i wasn't talking about a price drop on vita i was talking about price drops on ps3 of about $50 - $100 by the time wii u launches

this would put a ps3, vita  combo at, at least $450 which is very comparable to the price many expect the wii u to arrive at ( $350 - $400 ) thats why i was confused when you said it'll be twice as expensive but of course this all depends on the final price point of the wii u

and yes i absolutely agree with the rest of what you said... as i said in the op the fact that all ps3 owners will not have vita will reduce the support the connection ( if one is made ) will get... honeswtly for the most part i only see it being used for some 1st partyy games and official sony apps... but that wasn't what this was about its just about if the potential is there
