Well, I'd guess that it is often far worse for the industry. I know an insane number of people who didn't bother with a GBA/DS because they emulated them on their computer. Considering it only requires a few clicks to download an emulator and whatever game you want for it and the fact that it robs companies of the money they should've made on the hardware as well as the software, it would be easy for it to completely kill some consoles.
