I actually kept a praying mantis as a "pet" during my college years. I only had it for 1-2 months (found it outside when it was about to be winter, so I basically prolonged it's life a month or two). I would feed it crickets from the pet store. I eventually had to keep the crickets separate because it would massacre all of them (would just kill them not even eat them most of the times).
