I think there was a mechanism in ancient near eastern law of appeal for when someone's virginity was questioned, though i could be mistaken. I do know that those laws stretch back to Sumer and Ur to have nonvirgins stoned to death, but of course these were laws that also treated women as property, and part of the reason she had to be killed was because she lost her property value
