I think it's like Scottish Independence.
In otherwords, an idea that's unpopular but scores you points with the right audience.
The only difference is the secessionsts might have an economic boom rather then bust. A Southern California country probably would steal a lot of the Norths buisness. (Like the rest of the country, but you get to still live on the beach.)
