radio signals used to transport tv and stuff go in every direction like you said thats the reason why they weaken extremly fast: distance in the power of minus squared with extreme costly efforts like a million radio antenna field we could detect maybe 500 lightyears away radio signals 100000 lightyears away is completly impossible nowadays we wouldnt detect earth2 in 10 lightyear distance the background radiation radiates on almost all frequencies and overlaps possible signals its impossible to filter that on galactic distances. seti searches for messages directly send to earth with the intend to contact us not for et tv.
btw: someone mentioned big bang was caused by colliding nitrogen and hydrogen. thats false nothing existed befor big bang there was nothing to collide no atoms no room no time. and nitrogen came much later anyway it has to be fused in stars after big bang only hydrogen and helium existed.
