Yes! The first game was amazing. I was there for a few years. It was my first MMO. It had a great community, huge battles, different weapons for each faction (3 of them fighting for control) and vehicles/aircraft too.
Planetside had a lot of bugs and balancing issues too though. It didn't develope any further than it was which wasn't the worst thing but it got stale for a lot of people. I'm actually surprised that it's still going. If I still had my original packaging and discs I think I would play it again just for old times sake.
I know I met some people there in 2003 that I am still friends with and still game with today. My favorite bug with the game was that for some reason users with certain laptops would get a "speed" bug. So, I would be in a tank flying around running people over while my buddy would shoot and we just kept saying, man it feels like we're going too fast for a tank, lol. It even worked for me on foot. I got reported a lot but admins could do nothing but say yep, it's our fault, sorry.
