The people who bashed the DS or Wii are NOT the people bashing the 3DS and WiiU right now. The people bashing 3DS and WiiU are the same fans that did not buy N64 and Gamecube, causing those systems to be failures that needed a remedy as drastic as Wii.

DS had tons of top down RPGs, 2D platformers, and "non-games" like Brain Age. 3DS has Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart with a gimmick, 3D Mario, an Ocarina remake and 3D Kid Icarus. These are Gamecube style games, and that's why people are unhappy with Nintendo and why 3DS sales are terrible so far.

It looks like WiiU is going in a similar direction to 3DS. Wii already did not have proper follow ups to NSMBW, Wii Sports or Wii Fit. It did not have the 3D action/adventure games that were promised in early Wii promo videos. And now that we are getting Zelda at the end of the system's life, even that is a puzzle game, with a Nintendo rep saying even the enemies are like little puzzles. This is what people are mad at.

Nintendo is unwilling to continually make the games that made them successful, ie the games that their fans most love.

Mario Kart with a gimmick? Please explain. Gliders and going underwater are about as gimmicky as picking up powerups while driving around a race track on a cart.

I was going to retort that it was no more gimmicky than Bikes (and really only as gimmicky as "tricks"), but yours made even more sense

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
