Its definitely in 'Indian culture'. That would not be the best term to use, but its true. I studied the Vedic texts (wherein the transmigration of the soul is described) and the commentary also included comparisons to most other philosophical systems. The main difference in the Vedic being that all souls are of the same nature, but some are just covered by ignorance to a larger extent and hence wind up in lower species. So definitely the only philosophy where there is no dog-soul, plant-soul, human-soul etc. as far as I have learnt.

That is exactly why this case is beyond reason.
