The goal post has changed as result of time changing people expectations and standards. In 2006 people complained of the lack of HD as that was considered the future of video displays. We're in 2011 and HD is now seen as the standard, its no longer a selling point because every device out today is expected to have it. It would be like microsoft bragging that their next devic features a rumble or a dual analoge sticks. On top of that HD is simply a resoultion, a N64 game could be played in HD but it will still look like a N64 game(albeit slightly cleaner/sharper). During the begining of this era people began to use HD as a way to generalise visuals seen on 360/ps3 since they were running in HD and the reason why people still complain about the wii U is because these precise reasons.

The ps3/360 are fairly dated and are starting to show thier age, peoples concerns are that in 3 years from now when sony/micorsoft release their new Hardware, the Wii U will be very outdated if ipowerwise its only midly beyond that of the ps3/360 and it will be in the same posistion the wii is in now. Also you speak of tech demos but they are notoriously misleading and by that nature the Wii tech Demo was failry underwhelming. Until people see live demos or Nintendo boast of its power they are gonna remain sceptical, the fact nintendo shy away from sharing specs only feuled this as that mentality is one which they only adopted once they started producing underpowered hardware. On top of that the first footage they showed happended to be new supermario bros mii which looked like a ps2 title; naturally that made people doubt its power.

This seems to be people main concerns right now and rightly so, if developers wish to make use of more powerfull hardware they will see the Wii U holding them back and possibly withdraw support on their most ambitious projects. This what happened with wii

Also something that nintendo was trying to sell was the fact that this console is gonna have 3rd party support. 3rd party support the 360/-ps3 already benefit from and if your the sort of person who is excited by those experiences i dont see why you wouldnt already have a ps3/360. So part of the question becomes; "am i really gonna spend $300-400 just for this new control and some nintendo exclusives?".

In regards to the control, it definitely has potential again it hasnt quite struck people yet people we've only seen it applied in tech demo experiences which are reminisant of mini-games. The most obvious application is using the screen as a new interface and i think this will be the most common application (it was for the DS) but that isnt enough for some people to purchasing a new console.

To be honest nintendo didnt help the situation as they presented the console horribly. I've only been sold on it on infomation that was revealed by 3rd party sources and the fact that i love some of nintendos IPs (Not every1 loves mario and zelda) and nintendo themselfs raised more question than they answered. I dont think think people are unfair to nintendo, people only bitch about them becuase nintendo gives people something to bitch about. Once the DS reached its stride, hardly any1 talked crap about becuase they were happy with the experience it provided. if nintendo did the same for their new home console the same would apply. I think people have become a bit more septicle of nintendo but only becuase they have been let down in the past.

If nintendo had:
1)announced we have a new console, and then showed the hardware itself.
2)Mentioned that the console will be beyond that of current-gen console but they couldnt yet specify the specs because the hardware is unfinalised. And then finish saying that the hardware is powerfull but keen to keep in at an affordable price.
3) Then reveal the control and show a trailer of the controls potential features. they show either a tech demo or preferably a live playable demo demontrating both the graphics and more of the control unique features in a tradition game experience (zelda, COD, GTA, Oblivion etc not mini games)
4) They should quickly mention that online is a key focus with this new harware but they are unable to delve into any details at this moment.
5) they finsh with a list of 3rd party games that will be available on the systems and any exclusives content.
6)b4 ending they should reafirm that today was about selling a concept and that the system will have its full reveal sometime in 2012.

far less people will be picking a ninty
