Indeed, Hiroyuki Ito is perfectly capable of directing a main series FF. He's even more capable than Motomu Toriyama, IMO. The problem is that he is more to do with the gameplay and structure side of things and I doubt he can tell a compelling story even if he tried to. FFVI and FFIX were mainly written by Sakaguchi, while FFXII was mainly written by Matsuno.
If Hiroyuki Ito is currently directing FFXV as I type this, then Matsuno should be writing the story as a freelancer as he did for Tactics Ogre on PSP. As I've said in a previous post in this thread, Matsuno is currently working on a new project and that may be as the freelance writer of FFXV. We'll have to wait and see.
