The medical benefits are almost non-existent (providing properly cleaning yourself isn't too much to ask) and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As for cleaning twice a day, we don't! All it would do is remove the natural lubrification. It needs cleaning about as often as the armpits and the skin in general need cleaning, to avoid smells and a buildup of oil. Personally I do it either every day or every other day depending on the weather and what physical activities I had (i.e. lots of sweating -> every day, little sweating -> every other day).

Cleaning your body too often (regardless of which part) is not good as all you do instead of removing dirt and stale secretions (sweat, body oils) is remove the new secretions that you need to keep your skin and hair healthy.
