There have been times where I have enjoyed a poorly reviewed game more than a much better reviewed game even though they have been released to the same platform and are in the same genre. Sometimes this is simply a matter of preference, sometimes it is because the higher reviewed game had inflated scores for some reason, but it also can be caused by reviewers being unnecessarily hard on a game.

Now, I'm not saying this is the case with Duke Nukem Forever, but if I was a publisher and saw reviewers giving 1/10 for a game because the reviewer thought it was "cool" to be overly harsh I would probably stop sending pre-release copies for them to review.
