Think about it, if everyone is carrying a gun for "self-defence" the place isn't exactly going to be safe because everyone is carrying a lethal weapon. A small disagreement with someone could often turn into a shoot-out. Having a gun isn't going to protect but is probably more likely to draw you into a situation where you could get shot. You'd have to be of legal age and get a license for operating a gun.
