Microsoft has announced a new system-on-chip (SoC) processor for the Xbox 360 slim models.

An SoC processor integrates CPU (main processor), GPU (graphics), memory and I/O logic (other crazy computer shit you don't need to understand) onto a single powerful chip.

As well as reducing manufacturing costs of the console, the new chip will provide better power efficiency and reduce internal heat levels in the console. MS has also drastically reduced the size of both the motherboard and power supply units.

The platform holder assures the tech-minded of you that there'll be no compatibility issues with the new processor and the software, which was designed to run on multiple chips, because it has implemented a latency and bandwidth that mimics the older consoles.

There's no word on when the first machines packing these new internals will hit shops.

Microsoft made a slew of Xbox announcements at E3 last week. Read up on them, including plans to add cloud storage to Xbox Live, in our Xbox E3 press conference news round-up.
