Tension. Atmosphere and usually a good mystery plot.
I wish theres a game as good as Fatal Frame for the HD consoles. I remember after completing Fatal Frame 1, I threw the game away because I was so scared of it I didnt want that evil thing in my home. Fatal Frame 2 was really good too, with the tale of the 2 sisters. Fatal 3 was just ok.
For those who love good Asian horror stories, try
1) Shutter (Thai with English Subs)
2) Bunshinsaba (Korean with English Subs)
these 2 shows imho, rank up there with horror classics like The Ring and Sixth Sense.
