That's not necessarily true ... If you assume that the TV screen was split with 4 different viewports each of those would have a resolution of 960x540 which is higher than 480p.

Of course, what is rendered to the TV also eats away resources and there would be trade-offs regarding what could be rendered to each screen and the TV; especially as the number of tablet controllers increases.


But that's for the pixel shaders only. My understanding is that each separate viewport takes other significant resources as well, which is why splitscreen takes more horsepower than just a single full-screen for example.
