If the bit about the UNSC forces is true, then presumably they lost contact with ONI due to the war with the Covenant, presumably after Reach was destroyed, meaning they lost their supply-lines and command structure.
Or alternatively, this is where the UNSC Spirit of Fire ended up after the ending of Halo Wars, although this doesnt explain the dis-continuity to do with the Spartans that were aboard the Spirit of Fire.
