Playstation 1 and playstation 2 weren't region free. 

PS2's were locked by DVD movies not games, i don't remember PS1 though, but i can't play  my US FFVIII on my UK PS3.

The games were locked if I remember correctly, since I couldn't play Japanese games on my Phat Ps2. 

Yes you are correct. Altrough all laser mods were removing region lock.
