Right now I'm much more interested in PS Vita than the 3DS. At least on the hardware end anyway. I'm not pleased with the 3DS's software direction. I'd like to learn more about what the Japanese developers are up to with the Vita (including seeing what jrpgs go on there). I have a feeling that Vita will win Japan. The third-party Japanese developers will back this thing just like they are backing the PSP right now. The west will go to iOS/Android. Nintendo is already getting undercut by smart devices and I don't think we are far off from smart devices becoming the dominant platform for portable gaming. I just played a jrpg on my smartphone today on the go for like almost 2 hours. Didn't have a bag on me to bring a dedicated game handheld and I always carry my cell with me so it's convenient to be able to play something like that on my cell. If Japan embraced smartphone gaming in the way that the west did, I probably wouldn't even bother with buying anymore dedicated game handhelds. But because Japan keeps dedicated game handhelds afloat and Japanese developers make good shit, I'm keeping an eye on the Vita and 3DS (and I have a better impression thus far of Vita).

Without details on the specifics of 3G service plans, this is all just educated guesswork, but if plans are anything like the 3G service plans for the iPad, expect to pay about $20 a month for 3G data access without any sort of contract or plan.

At that price, it's not much of an issue to simply pay for activation on the months you know you'll actually be using the service. 

For an extra $50, most should know whether they're in the market for 3G connectivity and yes; better to have and use only when needed than save $50 and lose that option. 

The other thing to keep in mind (again, without any specific details) is that SCE is bringing their games to Android, making the decision a bit harder for current Android users. Of course that says nothing about which games will actually be ported, pricing, etc. to say absolutely nothing about the lack of a basic user interface (ie. buttons and analog sticks in addition to touch screens) on all smart phones. 

As a 3DS owner, it's going to simply boil down to the games. I don't have sky high expectations for the video service, internet connectivity and the bevy of other features that have yet to be implemented in the platform. It is what it is as a gaming platform.
