Actually, I remember the demand for the PS2 back in November and December of 2000. There were long lines, people fighting over the consoles, the works. I recall thinking at the time that there was no way I was going to get a PS2 until all that calmed down (and until it was $200; I had less money available for frittering away on game systems then than I do now). All that said, the PS2's best years were definitely after the price drop. There was a brief lull there before the price drop where the system wasn't selling as well as it had been, around late 2001/early 2002.
