This article is mostly just more evidence that the first year of a console isn't entirely indicative of its future. Also, there was a lot less PS2 bashing going on back in the day than there is PS3 (and Wii) bashing going on now. The pro-DreamCast crowd was particularly vehement in declaring the PS2 to be a death-knell for Sony around 2000, largely because they felt Sega's pre-emptive release of the DreamCast at an affordable price ensured it would triumph. That led to a number of only semi-informed articles such as this one. Indeed, the insult "DelayStation", popular nowadays, was thrown about with wild abandon by Sony's opposers back around 2000 and 2001 as well. To be fair, though, the PS2 didn't really take off until its first price drop; before that, it wasn't really obvious that it would become the system of choice for its generation.

actually ps2 still sold really well even without a price drop, but then with a price drop it sold even better. i wonder how much wii will sell when it gets its first price drop

You thought the shortages have been bad so far

Just when you thought it was safe to buy a Wii
