He needs a laptop for working at his University though. Alternatively he could have bought a cheap laptop and then built a dedicated desktop for gaming but that probably would hurt his wallet more (in the short-term anyway. A gaming desktop is a better investment long-term than a gaming laptop) than just buying a powerful juice-guzzling laptop (just have your ac adaptor hooked up to your laptop during gaming sessions and you're fine though).

I'm probably not going to spend a significant amount on a laptop ever again (I got a mid-range one, not the cheap ones). The cheap ass plastic of my Dell Studio laptop is starting to fall apart (I did drop my laptop on a concrete floor though. I had it laying on the arm rest of my couch and It took a hard tumble. Doh!) and it's not even 2 years old.

Pretty much this. My gaming sessions aren't long, especially given that my work on college takes a lot of priority, but I do want a good laptop that can handle pretty much anything. I haven't had a desktop since 2005 because of this.

I haven't had better luck with laptops as well. My Toshiba Satellite was stolen when it was barely above 3 years old and my Asus only was 2 and a half years old when it finally gave away. This is probably the last expensive laptop that i'm going to buy, so i'm kinda hoping it last much longer than the last two >_<
