I would say you run into the problem with game developers as storytellers.  Game developers can be immensely competent in a lot of areas, getting gameplay right, pushing the envelop in regards to graphics.  But then, on top of that, they are supposed to use this new medium and be top flight storytellers.  I believe doing this is likely too much to expect out of a team that has to do all of the above.  Of course, such teams could decide to hire really good writers, but how many of them actually understand the new medium, and are able to write for it effectively?

I completely agree, but never have I played a game which had such a logical meltdown like L.A. Noire.

Due to the demands on the developers, to do more than just make fun games, I feel the industry is asking for trouble trying to think they have to top Hollywood, out of a need to feel respected more, envy or whatever.   It isn't ok for people to just do fun games, they have to top in production value and so on.  There has to be some degree of envy on the part of the videogame industry that they can't have an award show that matches the Oscars and Emmys and having people talk about who is tops in their industry, and care about what they do, like they care about Hollywood.  No amount of money now seems to garner the desired respect.
