I'll just add: Try pressing the "FN" button along with "F5".  Choose the option for using monitor only.  I think that if you use the VGC cable to connect instead of the HDMI cable, you get different resolution settings, too.

On my laptop, all that does is disable backlight, sadly!

Also lol @ VGC cable. I call it that sometimes too!

I think I typed VGC because I had VGChartz on the mind!  Anyway, I'm glad your problem got solved.  I'm using an Acer Aspire connected to my TV, too (somebody broke the monitor while I was at work back in mid-April). It's actually pretty awesome.  I'm not even sure I want to go back to the smaller monitor--not that I have a choice, right now.

Looks like my work here is done.  Once again, I've saved the day!
