Yeah, I felt the same way. In RDR (SPOILERS!!!) Marston was murdered by the government to tie up their loose ends (END SPOILERS). And as soon as he told Kelso to go up before him, I knew what was about to happen which was completely cliche. A better point would've been to have Phelps live to deal with his demons. Death always seems to be the easy cop out in stories like these.
I was thinking this too, but it would just be really "soap opera-ish" for lack of a better term for this type of game. I think it was closed casket cuz he was probably completely crushed by the impact of the water or his skin tissue was bloated/waterlogged by the time they recovered his body.
