They took one person to court for releasing their trade secrets to the whole world, which could have financially devastating effects on their business. It's not crazy, absurd or in any way outlandish. It's smart business by Sony as they have plenty of attorneys sitting around on payroll.
They didn't hurt this poor wittle guy. They got him away from their products (And he signed off on it).

Odd, he did get taken to court and agreed to a deal that sounds awfully similar to a non-disclosure contract that an employee would have to sign.

No... it's not a trade secret because the law says so.
And again, people generally settle when facing a multimillion dollar coperation because said multi-million dollar corporation just tends to extend the shit out of lawsuits until the person they are sueing is bankrupt and has to give up anyway since lawyers aren't guranteed in civil trials.
It's basically the largest failing of our justice system. Big companys can fuck over little guys and small buisnesses just by tying things up legistlativly.
