That is Blizzard's position, yes. They argue that LAN would lead to more piracy. This is also why they deny tournanments LAN copies, because they might leak.
I argue that allowing those things promotes the game, that piracy doesn't subtract from your game's sales and the exposure may add to it (of course I am against piracy). They are losing more by being so restrictive.
I don't think multiple people from the same household playing each other is piracy, I view it as local multiplayer like Mario Kart or DS Download Play games. I don't mean multiple people playing online simultaneously with one copy. Blizzard chose to restrict this.
