Shadows of The Damned Release Date Revealed

Though we are still awaiting official confirmation from publisher Electronic Arts, it appears that developers Grasshopper Manufacture have taken it upon themselves to reveal the official release date for the forthcoming Shadows of the Damned. A collaboration project between videogame auteurs Goichi Suda (aka Suda 51) and Shinji Mikami, Shadows of the Damned is set to arrive on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this summer.

In Shadows of the Damned gamers are cast in the role of Garcia, a professional demon hunter who finds his true love kidnapped by vengeance-seeking demons. As he explores the farthest reaches of the netherworld Garcia faces danger and turmoil around every corner. The game features a grotesque, highly stylized art direction that transports players into a grisly world, with the entire experience enveloped by a pulse-pounding musical score by famed videogame music composer Akira Yamaoka.

While it’s long been known that Electronic Arts and Grasshopper Manufacture were aiming for a launch this summer, no exact date had previously been revealed. However, this morning Grasshopper Manufacture’s official English language Twitter account changed all that in a response to a fan’s comment about the most recent trailer.

After the fan suggested that the trailer had ‘blown their mind’, the official Grasshopper Manufacture Twitter account stated that they would be able to ‘put it back together’ on 7th June. With this being a Tuesday, it’s likely that the European launch would take place on the following Friday, 10th June 2011. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Shadows of the Damned, including any forthcoming official confirmation of the release date.

Suda: Shadows of the Damned will last around 10-hours, depending on difficulty selected

Goichi Suda has said that depending upon the difficulty level selected by the player, Shadows of the Damned will last around the 10-hour mark.

“It depends on the degree of difficulty, probably about 10 hours,” Suda told MeriStation. “Maybe more if you try to collect everything.”

In the game, you are basically packing a demon around in your hand so one would naturally assume the latest motion controls from Sony and Microsoft would come in handy – especially the former. However, Suda said neither will be supported in the game. This is due to the control scheme implemented, and also because the release dates announced for both Move and Kinect “influenced,” the developer’s decision.

Grasshopper does have a Kinect game in the works though, as we all know called Codename D, which uses Kinect; therefore, the studio is not adverse to motion controls. Plus, No More Heroes: Hero’s Paradise was released on PS3 in Japan with Move support and is slated for release in the US this summer.

Shadows of the Damned is set to release on June 21 on PS3 and Xbox 360, while Codename D

Mikami: Shadows of the Damned 'not Resi Evil', all Grasshopper
Posted: 09.03.2011 11:18 by Simon Priest Comments: 0
Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami said he's collaborating with Grasshopper Manufacture on Shadows of the Damned to make sure "the gameplay is right".

It's not going to feel like it's one of his games, he says. The project is "definitely a Grasshopper game" not a Mikami one. He's overseeing the fun factor.

"When you play it, especially if you’ve played a Resident Evil, you can kind of sense ‘ah, there’s a little bit of Resident Evil here,’” acknowledges Shinji Mikami. "But I don’t think it’s from the start it’s a Mikami game. It’s definitely a Grasshopper game.”

“I’m there to make sure the gameplay is right — make sure it’s tight, make sure it’s fun. That’s why I’m there,” he said. “When you look at it, you’re going to say this is a Grasshopper game.” Mikami-san is more on the technical side than the creative.

Shadows of the Damned releases on Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year.

Damned Monsters are Damn Scary

Some concept art of the monsters in Shadows of the Damned have surfaced. Easily, these creatures are the stuff of nightmares.

Withered human bodies with evil eyes trapped in body cages with blades on their appendages; corpse like things with machines on their arms, and red electricity flying out of their heads; pregnant skeleton gas mask things, and more. Oh boy.

Shadows of the Damned releases June 7th.

EA “Toned” Down Shadows of the Damned

In an interview with Gametrailers, Shadows of the Damned producer Shinji Mikami tells that Damned was once a very different project. Some of you may not remember, but we reported on Suda51′s survival horror title Kurayami (Darkness in Japanese) being in the works a long time ago. Kurayami faced major changes since development. What started as a game literally shrouded in darkness because a punk 3rd person horror shooter.

Mikami tells Gametrailers that the title had a much more “unique” style before EA came into the picture. After discussions about the game appealing to a larger audience the style of the game was toned down. Later in the interview Mikami discusses the pros and cons of working with a large publisher. While we hate to hear that a game’s original vision was changed, we can’t help but love every image of Shadows of the Damned. We can’t wait to get our hands on it this summer.

Shadows of the Damned to feature The Damned

Wow. Suda51 has just announced one of the more awesome music/gaming tie-ins that we’ve seen in a long time: Legendary punk band The Damned will be featured on the soundtrack to Shadows of the Damned, creating the game’s title track. How appropriate!

…the song is the perfect blend of video game soundtrack and trademark dark energy that only these two powerhouses of their respective industries could concoct.

To make this whole deal even sweeter, this “collaboration from Hell” was written by brilliant video game composer Akira Yamaoka, who appears on guitar and bass alongside members of the British band.

The Damned... in Shadows of The Damned

It’s the first time The Damned have performed a song for a video game, and the story is pretty sweet: CybergothX, a member of the Damned message board mentioned the in-development game to drummer Pinch, who obviously liked the concept enough to “set the wheels in motion” for the collaboration. The song was recorded on three different continents simultaneously, and the game’s sound director flew from Japan to the UK just to record with Dave Vanian.

In case you’re unfamiliar with The Damned, they are music industry heroes. They took the world by storm as the first outfit to release a punk single (1977′s New Rose), followed soon after by the world’s first punk album (Damned Damned Damned).

The Damned were the first punk band to hit the UK music charts, and the first to tour the United States, paving the way for other acts, like the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Ramones.

With founding members Dave Vanian on vocals and Captain Sensible on guitar and keys, and relative newcomer Pinch on drums, lyrics and backing vocals, the band is celebrating its 35th anniversary. The London lads are still creating their own unique brand of music, taking elements from various rock genres, punk, psychedelia, theatre and even cabaret.

Considered one of the forefathers of gothic punk, there’s no way that this joint project with Grasshopper Manufacture can be anything but awesome.

Get ready to smash it up with Shadows of the Damned in June, for PS3 and Xbox 360. We’re also hearing rumours that the collaboration may also work together on a live performance, too. Keep your eyes peeled!

Shadows of The Damned gets more disturbing

Fresh out of Acts 1 and 2 of Shadows of the Damned, these new shots give us another look at the shiny, mismatched colors and garish violence of Grasshopper Manufacture's hotly anticipated June release. Included is a shot of demon hunter Garcia Hotspur aiming for the goods on a stomping giant, battles in Hell's marketplace and what may be Garcia's doomed girlfriend and a six-eyed main antagonist called Fleming, who looks like he's been on the receiving end of one too many Photoshop clone-stamp disasters.

Shadows Of The Damned 'Not Too Out There' - Suda51

Tom Hopkins 10:37, Tuesday 3 May 2011

Grasshopper Manufacture boss Suda51 wants Shadows of the Damned to be distinctive, but not too crazy

Shadows of the Damned, the survival-horror collaboration between Suda51 and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, pits players as leather-jacketed anti-hero Garcia Hotspur (seriously) against a plethora of colourful demons. Hotspur's sidekick is a skull that forms numerous weapons.

Suda51 told NowGamer that the development team didn't want the game to be too over-the-top, however. “We question constantly whether it’s revolutionary or not and we always talk about new ideas when they come around with everyone, including EA," he said. "We don’t want to be too out there, but we have to strive to make it unique and that’s a good balance to aim for. EA has been really understanding of what we want to do as we’ve been working together.”

“I don't think EA expected it to be this crazy!”

Suda51 added that the game grew more weird as development went on. “They really welcomed the pitched as they were looking for a new type of game," he said of publisher EA. "It actually, at first, wasn’t as crazy as it was now. I don’t think they expected it to be this crazy!”

Suda51 added that it was down to Mikami to decide if game ideas were to edgy for inclusion.

Look out for the full interview on NowGamer soon.

When you think of EA, you generally think of grounded, realistic games. One might take place in a space station, but it's a believable space station, with serious space station people who believe their space station work is important. There's that level of seriousness to almost all of the company's games, typified by titles like "Dead Space," "Battlefield" and "Madden." They are undeniably Western, lacking the outlandish quirks that Japanese games tend to have. Because of this, it came as a bit of a shock that EA would link up with Grasshopper Manufacture, a Japanese developer known for some of the least grounded games on the planet (with the "No More Heroes" franchise being the most recent example). "Shadows of the Damned" is Grasshopper's latest, and it is being published under the EA Partners label.

The basic story of "Shadows of the Damned" is surprisingly cliched for a Grasshopper game: Guy has to save girlfriend from the clutches of demons in hell. But once you get beyond the basics, you begin to notice the trademark quirkiness. First of all, the hero's name is Garcia Hotspur. Secondly, he carries with him a flaming skull on a stick who speaks in a cockney accent and acts as Garcia's guide through the different layers of hell. Thirdly, there's a gun which shoots bones called The Boner. So yeah, the tone seems pretty spot on for Grasshopper.

Throughout the demo, it was made clear to me that one of the big inspirations for this game was Robert Rodriguez's directing style. Trippy doesn't begin to describe the extremes I was presented with during the 20 minute walkthrough. In one scene, Garcia had to fend off an oncoming wave of darkness by shooting a floating goat skull before feeding eyeballs to evil gates with baby heads in them. Although I wasn't able to play it, "Shadows of the Damned" appears to play like "Resident Evil 4," albeit with an "Evil Dead"-style sense of humor.

There's also an impressive level of creativity at work, here. One of the main bosses in the game seems to have died by swallowing a harmonica, so whenever he tries to talk, he ends up unleashing a series of bluesy harmonica riffs. Why? Why the hell not?

One could accuse EA's line-up of games of taking themselves too seriously, but "Shadows of the Damned" couldn't be more outlandish if it tried. It's a refreshing change of pace for the publisher, associating itself with such flagrant ridiculousness. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at it sometime before the game's June release.
