I didn't like the controller at first. It really felt awkward for a while. Now when I play something with a regular gamepad I almost laugh. Going back really does feel like I'm going back to something that is no longer valid.
The exact same thing happened when I went from the Atari joystick to the NES gamepad. It didn't feel right at all for the longest time. Then when I picked up a joystick again it felt almost prehistoric in comparison.
That said, I do think that it's entirely logical to not buy a Wii because of the controller. You're asking a lot of people to learn something new and that is scary. It is the same reason that older people don't like computers. Being scared won't stop change from happening though.
