As for the table, there's countless possible reasons for it having upended itself without much more than a cat or two to help it along. Or even just good old gravity finally getting to it. Though this sounds more like a cat lept onto the table, and caused enough momentum to tip the whole thing and spill it over upside-down. I've seen a similar thing happen before with a somewhat unstable table.

Which incidentally would also explain why the cats were scared ;)
