What happened to that update where passwords could only be set from the console? Did I imagine all that?

Problem is that it's for the original PS3 that your account was created on, but not everyone has their first system. Malfunction, buy and sell, crazy kids, etc. That's what the online option was for.

 Which was done through your email.  This was apparently an exploit where you didn't need to go through someones email... but just know what it was.
