All I have to say is context is everything. The things making fun of you are trying to kill you and they're supposed to be bad things. I would have to imagine that if the parents hadn't made such a big deal of this the kids would have never thought twice about it.
It's like getting mad at Disney for a villain mocking the hero for being a do-gooder.
