Did you get the older version, or the newer one which had "You are fired!" on the box?  I personally had little trouble with either version actually.  Then again, I play a lot of Euro boardgames.

Older version.  I just remember it involved putting money into boxes and swapping it around and such.

You would pump cash into the properties to increase their value, and I believe cards could be used to mix things up.  There is an auction mechanism.  The newer version simplified things actually.
