3DS is doomed is not a fact.  However, say it were.  That wouldn't mean that console gaming would be doomed.  It would possibly mark the high point of console gaming being now.  But console gaming would look to continue to have a niche to it.

LOL, I can't ever resist kidding about 3DS  . Anyway, even with Ninty trying to kill Wii too early, this gen, for home consoles, is going to outsell last gen before this year's end. But just thanks to Wii fading early and to all of the three successors eliminating current consoles shortcomings, next gen cold even outsell them, the peak could be still to be reached, or, at worst, 8th gen could have flat growth compared to 7th. About portables, the current gen is the biggest ever by a huge margin. If 3DS does worse than DS, but NGP does better than PSP, the gen just started could end up even with the current one. For the further future, who can tell? Despite very good sales for smartphones, the vast majority of cellphone users like them simpler and use them just for calls and messages and quick and cheap photos, to avoid the risk of finding the batteries dead should the phone be needed for really serious reasons. Cheap photo and video functions in cellphones didn't kill cameras, having the right equipment and controls for their respective main functions is a big advantage for cameras and portable consoles compared to all-purpose cellphones. To sum it up, everything is d0med, as usual since 2nd gen.
