While it may not be a popular opinion, I think a certain number of people run for high office to increase their profile. In a lot of ways, a failed candidate can be more "important" and make more money than the person who holds the office they were running for.

I think Sarah Palin was (probably) somewhat serious when she was the VP candidate. Since then I think she has become more of a tabloid "politics for profit" candidate.
Effectively, I think either she is smart enough or well managed enough to know that a person can become very wealthy by selling books and speaking engagements to 10% of the population.
