SquareEnix doom was forcasted a long time ago ever since the begining of the Playstation 2 era when they were separated companies. The merge didn't actually help either. The problem was the direction the company was taking through the Playstation 2 era.
I'm not saying that the games were bad or not successful, because the sales and scores prove otherwise. but the games after Final Fantasy X showed the direction Square was getting at, and then with the merge they further went down that path. An implosion could happen any moment, but it happen on this generation where development costs are high and competition is strong.
SquareEnix needs to reboot many of it's franchises (Except Dragon Quest maybe) or find new goldmines.
